Liliana’s class had Heritage Day today and so she was able share something from her “culture”. Well, we’re Canadian, but my side of the family is 100% Dutch, and so she brought dropjes (salted black licorice). I grew up eating them and all three of my kids love them. (I’m quite proud of this fact.)
Liliana will explain more:
My one regret is that I didn’t warn her ahead of time that not everyone would like them. She came home crying that one kid said, “I wish they were never made!” I told her that her dad doesn’t like them either, and that some people just spit them out because they find them awful. It’s never bothered me; more for me.
She’s so outgoing and LOVED being the centre of attention. And loved that Preston and I were there to watch. Preston even joined the class for the rest of the presentations.
He was miserable about it, obviously.
And if you caught when Liliana said she gave up candy, well she gave it up for lent and has been so strong in her conviction. We didn’t encourage either of the girls to give up anything, but she decided to do it and has been strong. I wish I had her willpower. We’ve even offered her candy a couple times not thinking straight and she has reminded us of her abstinence from sweets.
She never fails to surprise me.
