Liliana’s Seventh Birthday Letter (six months late)

Untitled Untitled

Dear Liliana,

I am writing this nearly six months after your seventh birthday. I’m not exactly sure why it took me so long to write, but it’s probably because you’re so extraly special that I didn’t know how to fit everything into one post.

You are kind, compassionate, thoughtful, inquisitive, intelligent, and sensitive. You are learning to be kind to others even if they’re not kind to you, and I am so proud of the way you handle certain situations. You love to talk to anyone you come across. Sometimes you tell them about school, sometimes your siblings, sometimes what you did that day, sometimes God/church/Jesus/theology. You pray with such wisdom and clarity, you are constantly a surprise to me. You are beyond words.

You always see the other side of things. I can’t even think of a specific example right now, but when we’re watching shows or movies, you pay very close attention to every detail and you don’t hesitate to let me know when a character is not being kind or fair to another character. You empathize especially with the younger ones. You also ask three hundred million questions because you want to know every detail about what is going on at any one moment.

You are also a fiery ball of fury. If you don’t get your way, you get an angry look on your face while your shoulders rise and your hands are balled into fists, which is usually followed by a growl and a stomp to your room where, before closing the door, you attempt to get the last word in. Next you will yell at me from your room, telling me how I’m the worst mum EVER and how I’m RUINING YOUR LIFE and how you thought this was going to be such a nice day before I RUINED it.

Your preschool teacher once told me that you had more personality in your little finger than anyone else had in their whole being.

You love to read. If ever you are asked to do something, be it getting dressed or cleaning your room or simply getting something from your room, you are found reading on your bed. Even sitting there in your underpants. You read far above your grade level, but you love books with pictures in them. Even if the pictures are a couple pages apart. You love to learn about new things and can soak up information like a sponge.

You are so full of JOY. I have never seen another human being get so excited about even the little things. We spent most of today and yesterday outside, and after a few hours outside yesterday you said to me, “Oh mum, isn’t this nice? It’s being outside so nice? I’m so glad God gave us this day to be outside. I love it so much.”

Your clothing choices match your personality. They are bright and unique.

You still have many fears. When water is running in the bathtub it needs to be monitored very closely or else you will lose your cool. There were sparklers on your birthday cake (on your actual birthday, six months ago) and when you couldn’t blow them out, you panicked and told us to put them out because the house was going to burn down.

You love your My Little Ponys quite a lot. You play with them daily, and always have one or three with you at all times. There is Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rarity, Spike, Princess Cadance, and Shining Armor. And some Equestria girls. Even your brother knows the name of each pony.

You keep our lives anything but boring, and we are so blessed to have you as a part of our family.

I love you, you little weirdo.
